About Stained-glass Artist Aldina Rubino

How it all begins

Born and raised in Sicily. The first vivid memory of my childhood is making mandalas with mandarins at age 4. In my teen-ager time I explored chiaroscuro using pencils, charcoal and ink. In my 30s I was living in Germany when my mother Lucia D'Aquino pointed out a stained-glass shop in my neighborhood. At that time, I was studying languages at the University of Saarbruecken, and I was already working as an Interpret for the VW factory in Kaiserslautern. She asked me to take a class and teach her how to work with glass. And so I did. While she thought it was too hard for her, for me it was a call back to my soul journey.

Felton, California

In 2000 I was visiting my brother in Felton, California, and things fell into place as if they were meant to be: he fulfilled his dream of opening a Mediterranean restaurant just down the road from his home, while I was able to support him and cultivate my passion for stained-glass art. In 2014 I had the honor and privilege to restore the Butterfly Doors created in the 70s, which was also the main entrance of our restaurant named "La Bruschetta".

Art and Soul Journey

Being an artist has been a devotional commitment toward my Heart and Soul to heal the wounds of growing up, and towards those who feel impelled to experience art in a mystical way. Art has been giving me more than just the opportunity to express my love for the world, it has offered me the best Medium to combine sunlight, sensational colors and mysticism all in one. Today being an artist feels like being on service.

My themes for designs touch many fields and cultures.

One of my favorite things to do nowadays is to co-create with my customers, allowing them to express visions and ideas to unlock their imagination, and to choose glass at my studio in Santa Cruz while I keep them involved throughout the process by sharing pictures.
